Does Your Switchboard Need an Upgrade? A Newcastle Electrician’s Guide

If your home was built more than 20 years ago, chances are your switchboard wasn’t designed to handle the demands of modern living. From air conditioning and electric vehicles to home theatres and smart appliances — today’s households need more power than ever before.

At Top Notch Electrical and Services, we carry out switchboard upgrades throughout Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Maitland and the Hunter Valley every week. Here’s how to tell if your switchboard is due for an upgrade — and why it matters for your home’s safety.

5 Signs Your Switchboard Needs Upgrading

  1. Your switchboard still has ceramic fuses — Old-style fuse wire offers no protection against overloads and can be a fire risk. Modern circuit breakers trip instantly and can be reset with the flick of a switch.

  2. Breakers trip frequently — If your breakers are constantly tripping when you run the dishwasher, microwave, and air con at the same time, your switchboard is overloaded and undersized for your lifestyle.

  3. You have no RCD protection — Safety switches (RCDs) are now required by Australian standards. If your switchboard doesn’t have them, your family isn’t protected against electric shock.

  4. You’re planning a renovation or EV charger — Adding a new kitchen, air conditioning, solar system or EV charger requires additional circuits. This is the perfect time to upgrade your switchboard to handle future needs.

  5. Burning smell or discolouration around the board — Any signs of heat, scorch marks, or a burning smell near your switchboard is a serious warning sign. Switch off the main and call a licensed electrician immediately.
